Visited August 5, 2009 -- Andersonville prison was the deadliest prisoner of war camp during the Civil War with a total of nearly 13,000 deaths. Over 40% of all Union prisoners of war who died during the Civil War perished at Andersonville. [32.20139, -84.13167]

The striking figures, faces grim and gaunt, stand solemnly at the entrance to the National Cemetery. Sculptor William Thompson’s bronze and marble design was selected over other entries to be the state of Georgia’s memorial to all Americans fighting in wars from our country’s birth up to the present. This monument has been erected by the State of Pennsylvania in pursuance of an act entitled an act to commemorate the heroism, sacrifices and patriotism of the Pennsylvania soldiers who died in Andersonville Prison, Georgia, while confined there as prisoners of war: by the erection of a suitable monument in the cemetery at that place; creating a commission for such purpose, and appropriating the necessary money therefor. The Raiders Graves - The Andersonville Raiders were a band of rogue soldiers held prisoner at the Andersonville Prison during the American Civil War. Led by their chieftains Charles Curtis, John Sarsfield, Patrick Delaney, Teri Sullivan, William Collins, and A. Muir, these soldiers terrorized their fellow prisoners, robbing and sometimes even murdering them. The executed raiders were placed in seperate graves well away from the mass graves for the other prisoners, ironically they were buried in their own seperate graves. The death toll continued in the prison and the graves quickly grew passed the raider's graves. Today, the raider's graves are almost in the center of cemetery.
